ISRAEL – HOME OF SCIENTIFIC INNOVATIONS

Posted by yipbop · Leave a Comment

medical innovationsIn this essay,  I will abstain from the customary political indignation in view of the latest biased Jew bashing and anti-Semitism analogous to that of the medieval and World War II events, and focus instead on the steady medical breakthroughs emanating from Israel, the home of innovation.

Although at some point, the use of gene therapy seemed to fade the radar when researchers realized just how great a distance stretched from the concept of using genes for therapy to translating that concept into clinical practice, lately, despite significant hurdles, gene therapy remains alive and steadily under very active investigation, especially by a distinguished team of investigators in Israel. This community of scientists, albeit underfunded when compared to other scientists in the U.S. and Europe, has managed to be a major driver of productivity and innovation.

One such discovery involves the use of a molecule to regenerate dying cells. What does this mean in lay terms? This outstanding clinical application gives the potential to reverse what is now irreversible, liver and kidney failure. In addition, this extraordinary molecule is being tested with great success in animal models to reverse the side-effect known as “dry mouth syndrome” or non functioning salivary glands experienced by patients suffering from cancers of the head and neck undergoing radiation. This medical breakthrough can be interpreted as sparing such patients from severe and ongoing suffering while allowing higher doses of radiation to increase their chances of cure.

Another medical innovation emanating from Israel, while having no impact on patient survival, contributes massively to cancer patients’ moral and psychological well being. The Israeli investigators discovered that this same molecule prevented animal models from losing their hair or fur when undergoing irradiation. They found that a protein plays a central role in hair loss.  They applied an antibody to this protein and administered it prior to radiotherapy in animal models. These animals kept their hair throughout radiotherapy. Clinical trials are underway and Israeli scientists are looking into the prevention of hair loss from chemotherapy as well as radiotherapy in patients undergoing cancer treatments, a leading cause of psychological distress.

Many more medical innovations emanating from Israel are in progress such as the use of gene therapy based on RNA interference (RNAi) referred to in a previous essay for curing cancer without the customary invasive use of chemotherapy and radiation,  and I intend to keep you posted on this major innovation in future essays. It is a shame that the world which will ultimately benefit from these medical innovations originating from Israel, are instead making the lives of Israelis insufferable through unjustified bias and even medieval anti-Semitic accusations.  Could one imagine what additional stellar contributions might be made if Israel in particular and Jews in general were not the victims of unjustified accusations and harassment by the world community, especially when Israel stands among the giants in new technologies and medical discoveries that enhance our everyday lives?

BACK TO DARK AGES: DURBAN II

Posted by yipbop · Leave a Comment

un flag 225x300 BACK TO DARK AGES: DURBAN IIWelcome to the U.N. sponsored Durban II circus on racism to be held in Geneva. The U.N., whose creation following the genocide and massacres of World War II, was to maintain world peace and encourage respect for human rights, is actually accentuating and promoting ad nausaum the tyrannical demonization of Israel that took place in the previous Durban I conference in South Africa. To make matters even worse, the U.N. so-called leaders for human rights invited to lecture, Ahmadinejad, who just by his presence at the podium without even ousting a single word, symbolizes the epitome of human right abuses, genocidal threats against a member country such as Israel, his patronage of terrorism, in short, the antithesis of what this conference is meant to achieve.

To compound the malevolent direction of this second conference, it is pathetic that the Human Rights Council elected none other than Libya to chair the agenda and objectives of this conference, with 19 vice-chair luminaries such as Cuba, Iran, Pakistan, Russia and South Africa, none of which symbolizes by any length of the imagination the picture of equality, justice or human rights. Moreover, we have also just witnessed the hypocrisy behind the President of Switzerland who has just paid his respects to Ahmadinejad, a holocaust denier and a tyrant who should instead be isolated and utterly defeated.

The world is indeed in dire shambles! The U.N. has proven to be so ineffective, biased, unfair and in direct contradiction to its declared goals of bringing peace and harmony to the world, that it should be disbanded right out. The world certainly does not need an organization that is failing in its mandate and is instead promoting and accepting leaders of countries who ferment genocide, de-stabilization and dictatorial elements while ignoring famine, carnage and genocide and corrupt leaders in places such as Africa, North Korea and many others. The U.N.’s obsession with Israel, the object of this diabolical charade, knows no limits. There is a large collection of U.N. resolutions criticizing Israel unmatched by any other nation. Israel is a democratic sovereign country who has been forced to defend itself since its birth against the forces of evil bent on its elimination. We cannot subsist in a world led by leaders who unjustly and premeditatedly support and promote the bashing and demonization of a member state to appease devilish and hysterical anti-Semites characterized mainly by Islamic and dictatorial countries.

It is about time that a major house cleaning is undertaken globally starting with its symbol, the U.N., by either reforming the U.N. policies or rather its total dismantling. Failure to do so would encourage more and more haters and evildoers to de-stabilize the world and create a global aura of corruption with attacks of utmost virulence on human rights synonymous to the medieval Dark Ages.

ALIYAH – FINAL JEWISH DESTINATION

israel flag 300x225 ALIYAH – FINAL JEWISH DESTINATION

Thousands of years of Jewish suffering, expulsions, and antisemitism, and still a large portion of the Jewish population throughout the world have not yet settled in Israel. Those who have come in the past decades have been forced to make the move due to the regimes they have been subjected to, such as Jews from Russia and the Arab countries. Jews in the Diaspora feel comfortable in their nice homes, well paid jobs and they are treated with respect, for now. But hold on to your hats, things may change when you least expect it. The world economy is in shambles, major Jewish investment firms have been accused of stealing people’s investments, and terrorist regimes are on their way to become nuclear. Who do you think are going to be blamed? The Jews! Worrisome news indicates that world’s antisemitism has increased by many folds, similarly to the Nazi times, and I believe it would be wise for Jews in the Diaspora to take the big step and contemplate moving to Israel. Moreover, if you care for Jewish survival, and especially avoid the scourge of assimilation which distances so many Jews from their religious faith and origins, you should challenge yourself and aspire to new spiritual heights.

Israel, the Holy Land, is a multicultural society and several languages are spoken. Israel remains today a bastion of freedom for any Jew in the entire world. Healthcare is available to everyone. It is a thriving democracy with rapidly expanding businesses; in fact, it is called Silicon II in the high tech and biomed industries. As opposed to what is shown on television throughout the world, this is in no way a war torn country. In fact, everyone who has made aliyah will tell you that they feel safer than in most Western countries. You can see toward the evening hours, mothers strolling with their babies, and people jogging. If you are not necessarily religious, but traditional, you will find that Jewish holidays are celebrated throughout the country and Shabbat, the day of rest, is marked by reunification of family and friends.

I am not surmising it is easy to move to Israel, in fact it isn’t. But, as opposed to the earliest olims, the move to Israel is now much easier, especially with the benefits and incentives offered by the Ministry of Absorption and the Nefesh B’ Nefesh organization. Within one year, I promise that you will acclimatize yourself to the pluses and minuses, and will settle with comfort and feel connected to the land. Many wealthy Jews prefer to live physically in Western countries, but die in Israel. Why not do both? As the Jewish scriptures states: “Behold, I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which the L-rd swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give to them and to their seed after them” (Deuteronomy 1:8). The Torah promises to eventually redeem us and return our inheritance to us; it appears that due to the series of natural calamities and man-made tragedies presently afflicting the world, it appears to me that the time has come.

APARTHEID IN ISRAEL?

Posted by yipbop · Leave a Comment

Sitting DucksA wealth of reports, the media and public demonstrations by Arabs and Israel bashers throughout the world, unfairly link the treatment of Palestinians in Israel to the shameful racially segregated policy in South Africa between 1948 and 1994 enforced by white minority governments. Under these 317 Apartheid laws that touched every aspect of black livelihood, Blacks could not marry Whites, Blacks could not hold jobs reserved for whites; the focus of Black education was on technical, blue collar type of work; public bathrooms, buses, and amenities were segregated between “whites” and “colored,” etc.   These abhorrent practices ended when Nelson Mandela was elected President in 1994.

A case in point is the outrageous and biased book by the late President Carter entitled “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” This fictitious narrative is full of erratic inventions, errors, and inconsistencies. In particular, it is outrageous that the use of the laden word ‘apartheid,’ prominently displayed in the title of his book borders on anti-Semitism and suggests an equivalence to the reviled policies of South Africa. The end of his narrative suggests that the bulk of culpability for the lack of peace in the Middle East rests in Israel’s unwillingness to comply with international law and the road map.  Carter surely ignores the bus bombings, rockets and maiming of hundreds of Israeli civilians, and the willingness by several Israeli governments to give away Gaza, Judea, Samaria and even our most venerated site, the Temple Mount, to a non compliant Palestinian authority whose covenant is the destruction of Israel.

How could the racial practices in South Africa which deprived black people from the basic and political human rights be compared in any way to the treatment of Palestinians in Israel? For starters, since the first Knesset elections in 1949, there have been 63 past and present Arab members. Arabs in Israel have equal voting rights, and, as opposed to other Arab countries, Arab woman can vote; Arabic like Hebrew is an official language; street signs are written in both Arabic and Hebrew; there is freedom of religion -this stands in contrast with Saudi Arabia, where Islam is the only religion permitted; in Israel, Arabs easily access the Temple Mount as opposed to Jews, and in Israel, the law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, religion, political beliefs, and age.

Thus, due to the disparity of comparing South Africa’s apartheid policies with those of Israel, I question the reason behind this excessive global campaign to vilify Israel, and even endorsed by Carter? The answer is quite simple: it is nothing but fashionable hardcore anti-Israel bashing which borders on antisemitism and which will be well represented once more at the upcoming Durban II conference in April, 2009. The world does not condemn Saudi Arabia or other Arab dictatorships which exercise “gender apartheid” to their women and homosexuals, and still practice corporal punishment including amputations and beheadings. Moreover, Israel is singled out by the United Nations for human rights abuses while true abusers such as China, Iran, Cuba, and Syria are overlooked. But Israel, with its laws ensuring complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants and is faithful to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, is demonized and unjustly criticized.

What unusual double standards! You may wonder? Evil as in the days of Nazi Hitler has to be recognized and dealt a severe blow. The world attitude to turn a blind eye to irrational and insidious Jew bashing has to be eradicated or it will come to haunt us all.

FUTURE MEDICAL DISCOVERIES – cont.

Sketch of new Hadassah Medical Center building

In a previous essay, I touched on medical progress with regard to research being carried out in Israel by hundreds of biotech and biomedical startup companies sparse throughout the country.

Today, I continue with other interesting ideas that may help us live as long as trees and look years younger. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of patents with regard to medical devices and diagnostics companies in Israel and abroad which have already completed successful proof of concept studies in animal models and are embarking on first clinical studies in humans.

One case in point is centered on cosmetic tissue augmentation, wound healing and tissue regeneration. The technology is based on a novel adhesive peptide for tissue engineering. The foundation of these technologies is based on the biological activity of fibrin, a protein responsible for blood coagulation, which the inventors adapted for multiple uses for cell culturing and tissue engineering. Moreover, it is estimated that over 10,000 patients died within the past five years waiting for an organ transplant. Tissue engineering could in the future replace organs and avoid the hazards associated with organ transplantation.

Major advances are being done with regard to treating Lupus disease which is a dreadful disease with no cure that turns the body’s defenses against the body itself and affects organ systems, skin, joints and internal organs.  Around 400,000 Americans suffer from lupus.  A company in Israel is developing a drug-device column which selectively removes from circulation more than 90% of the antibodies in the blood associated with this disease. This innovative method represents a breakthrough in the treatment of lupus, since until now, there has been no treatment for this ailment and the standard care has been based on the use of steroids and chemotherapy with serious side-effects.

Another exciting development is the advent of novel diagnostic tools for breast and colon cancer metastasis, diagnosis and prognosis. This novel diagnostic method is capable of evaluating the state of cancer progression, and most importantly, the efficacy of treatment with a single blood test.

In the advent of a stroke, heart attack and deep vein thrombosis, hospitals use what is called thrombolytic agents or anticoagulants in order to dissolve a clot and reopen an artery or vein. However, these agents in existence today cause severe side effects including damage to blood vessels and internal hemorrhage. We have already witnessed what happened to the former Prime Minister Sharon after his first stroke and treatment with anticoagulants. Fortunately, a company in Israel is developing safer and more efficient anticoagulant drugs for the treatment of stroke, heart attack and related indications.

Medical technological advances sprout each day and with the advent of stem cell therapy, I posit that within the next decade, serious diseases such as cancer will be treated and conquered with single injections rather than the traumatic and uncertain methodology used today.

FUTURE MEDICAL DISCOVERIES

Posted by yipbop · Leave a Comment

This decade has provided revolutionary technological developments and novel ideas that will hopefully ease and maybe eradicate malignant diseases affecting the world. Presently, doctors, researchers, and also engineers put their heads together to work out solutions for the development of therapeutics and medical equipment to improve our quality of life. The path to turn a promising idea into an effective therapy in the clinical setting is hard and tortuous; however, this strategy is unfolding. Presently, there are hundreds of startup biomedical and biotech companies working in Israel alone for this purpose.

There are many maladies affecting the world for which there is no remedy or cure, and one of the hallmarks of medicine in the future will be cell replacement therapy. For example, important research is taking place on Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative brain disorder that affects 120 -180 out of 100,000 among the Caucasian community. This disorder is caused by loss of dopamine-producing brain cells and is a very debilitating disease. And this is when future cell therapy comes into play by replenishing the brain with new dopamine producing cells which will be produced in the laboratory and biotech companies. Currently, experiments are being conducted in small animal models of Parkinson disease through cells derived from human embryonic stem cells with great promise for the future.

Another exciting prospect for the cure of cancer is through the development and production of nonengineered wild-type viruses or recombinant forms with genetic manipulation viruses. For example, the Newcastle Disease Virus which causes death in fowls is effective for treating brain cancer patients. Further research is on the pipeline for the cure of other types of cancers, such as lung cancer.

So fasten your seat belts because I’ll have much more to report in future assays about the prospects of cure for degenerative and malignant diseases. Israel is at the forefront of this exciting research and a leading player in the advancement of biotechnological and medical discoveries for a disease-free future.

For another summation of this topic, please check our previous assay entitled “Will we live as long as trees?”

FROM DURBAN WITH HATRED

Posted by yipbop · Leave a Comment

In the context of the forthcoming Durban II conference in March 2009, it would be worth reviewing what transpired during the Durban I conference in 2001 held in South Africa. Mary Robinson, the UN High Commissioner for human rights presided as Secretary General. Although the purpose of this gathering was to denounce human right abuses throughout the world, it was Israel who was specifically targeted BY the global community as a racist practitioner of apartheid and crimes against humanity, while completely disregarding the blatant abuses perpetrated by other countries.  The majority of countries called for the reinstitution of the 1975 Resolution 3379, which declared unabashedly that Zionism = racism, subsequently rescinded in 1991. What was disturbing during this 2001 Durban I, conference was the revolting literature that was circulated which included caricatures of Jews with hooked noses, Palestinian blood on their hands, and Israelis wearing Nazi symbols.

Now, fasten your seat belts and be ready for the Durban II Conference which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland in 20-24 April, 2009. This conference will no doubt follow in the footsteps of the previous one and such precious pearls such as Libya is the chair and Iran is a vice-chair. Both Canada and Israel have already announced that they will not attend Durban II because they have rightfully determined that it will likely be a repeat of the 2001 disaster. In addition, great news came in this morning that the U.S. is also pulling out of this conference since they determined after joining the planning sessions that they could not overturn the vitriolic tone against Israel.

You’ll have to realize that this Durban circus, led by human right abusers and dictatorships such as Lybia, Iran and Cuba, is a charade focusing on hatred and ridicule toward Israel. Can you imagine that these human right abusers are directing their hatred and criticism at Israel, a democratic state who follows the rules of law and war rather than other countries such as Darfur where their genocidal campaign is still continuing?

I will have to conclude that something is truly wrong in this world of ours. Israel is constantly being watched through a powerful microscope and is unusually reported in all newspapers’ front page headlines by Christian and Arab countries in particular to denounce Israel’s most minimal contravention. You would logically think that in spite of a Jewish population of just between 12 and 13 millions, and a minute country that you need a magnifying glass to spot Israel on the world map, that Israel would not even be mentioned, but rather ignored. Yet, this is not the case; in spite of Jews having made immense contributions to the world, especially being the first to divulge to mankind of the idea of One God, and the Ten Commandments, which represent the core of morality in the civilized world, Jews have been persecuted, killed and massacred throughout history. This phenomenon is difficult to comprehend, albeit one could attribute this behavior simply to jealousy or to a supernatural phenomenon difficult to comprehend. Hopefully, as written by the Prophets, Israel will regain its prominence, be a light to other nations, and the world of One God will resonate from Jerusalem as the waters cover the sea.

ISRAEL’S LOSS THROUGH U.S. BRIBERY

Posted by yipbop · Leave a Comment

It is a sad reality and a shame that Israel’s well being and future hinges on the U.S.’s good auspices. America is the only country in the world, so-called Israel’s strongest ally, who can deliver to the terrorists through Israel’s pressure. The billions of dollars that the U.S. delivers to Israel for its security and defense are presently questionable, depending on whether Israel complies with several U.S. demands. These include continuing negotiations based on the Road Map, freezing settlement construction, even for natural growth and ultimately expelling hundreds of thousands of Jews from their homes to make room to a Jew-free Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem.

If the above statements do not represent bribery, what is it? This Road Map, of course, is carried out with the Palestinian Authority, i.e., Mahmoud Abbas and his ilk which represent the PLO. This entity is not an honest broker for a peace agreement. In fact, even in their covenant and map, Israel is an occupying force of the entire Palestine and an obstacle to their prosperity and Islamic pretentions. We have seen what has happened to the lands that have been given to the PLO. Even our most venerated sacred sites like the tomb of Joseph was desecrated the moment we pulled out from this location.

It seems that Benjamin Netanyahu is going to be our next Prime Minister. The Western world does not seem very pleased with Israel’s choice. It is a right-leaning government just as the U.S. has suddenly swung back to its more liberal values under Barack Obama. With regard to the peace process, Netanyahu has proclaimed his own ideas in the form of economic track, and George Mitchell, the special US envoy, has already fired back by countering this proposal. The new Obama administration is now seeking to make peace with the Arab world. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? After all, who caused the 9/11 disaster?

Based on the last events that have taken place when Israel has withdrawn from territory, be it Lebanon or Gaza, the forces of evil, in fact Iranian proxies, are just waiting to take over whatever Israel will be pressured to give up, to endanger Israel  with more sophisticated missiles that will be able to reach even Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion airport.

Let’s face it. The pressure that the U.S. is bringing about to Israel to withdraw from territory through bribery will bring the dissolution of Israel as a Jewish state. This pressure is a sinister process backed by the U.S. and Europe to recognize “Legitimate Palestinian Rights” which consist, in reality, the liberation of all of Palestine, which is, in effect, a UN sponsored lobby with the purpose of destroying a member state.

WHY YOU SHOULD BELIEVE IN JEWISH DESTINY

Posted by yipbop · 1 Comment

jewish destinyThe proof is in the pudding or so the old proverb says. There is a large majority of Jews (let alone non Jews or Gentiles) who are skeptical about the Jewish religion meaning the existence of a supernatural “God” who “gave the Torah to the Jewish people” and of the strange status of Jews as the “chosen people.” Like in science, a theory has to be proven that it works; otherwise, it has no chance of passing through. We are physical beings and thus naturally believe what we can see or touch. On the other hand, how can you prove a thought or a feeling?

In Jewish history, which encompasses nearly four thousand years, we claim to be descendants of the ancient Israelites who settled in the land of Israel through our common lineage to the biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Our most holy and sacred writings in Judaism is the Tanach (24 books), comprising of the Torah (also known as the five books of Moses), Nevi’im (Prophets) and Ketuvim (writings).  Most of the writings in the Torah on the supernatural miracles, such as the exodus from Egypt, the 10 plagues, parting of the sea, the manna, etc., are read with disbelief and mostly considered by seculars and atheists as legend. However, one of the most important tenets of Judaism is knowledge. Only through the acquisition of knowledge and analysis of history that most, if not all of this skepticism, will be entirely dissipated.

Over three thousand years ago, the Jewish prophets delineated precisely the course of Jewish history, and so far, all of their predictions have taken place. For example:

Exile - worldwide dispersion of the Jewish people among the nations of the earth (Deutoronomy 4:26-27); in spite of our small number, the Jewish people has never assimilated and has maintained its identity

Antisemism – Hatred of the Jew has been a unique and historical phenomenon which does not fit the normal laws of history (Leviticus 26:36-38; Deuteronomy 28:65-67)

Forced conversion – There was forced conversion of the Jews such as during the Inquisition in Spain and Islam (Jeremiah 16:13; Deuteronomy 4:27-28)

Few in number – While the Jewish nation is ancient, its numbers are few (Deuteronomy 4:27; 28:62)

Jewish contributions to civilization – Extravagantly out of proportion to the rest of the world, contributions in science, literature, art, music, finance, medicine (Isaiah 42:6; Genesis 12:2-3; Isaiah 60:2-3)

Desolation of the land – During the 2,000 years of exile, no conqueror succeeded in annexing the Land of Israel because it had become a desolate waste (see writings of Mark Twain when he visited Israel in 1867, pp 216-359). (Ezekiel 33:28-29; Jeremiah 9:10; Deuteronomy 29:21-22)

Return – The greatest miracle is the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 against all odds after 2,000 years of exile and the return of the Jews to Israel (Deuteronomy 30:3-5; Isaiah 49:18-22; Jeremiah 31:6-7)

To summarize, what more proof do you need to see the hand of God in Jewish history? All of these prophecies were written over 3,000 years ago, and albeit nonsensical, they have been fulfilled to the letter. How could these prophets have predicted the unpredictable?

WORLDWIDE ANTISEMITISM

Posted by yipbop · Leave a Comment

Indeed, world antisemitism is on the rise and one wonders whether we are witnessing a repeat of the history prior and during World War II.  It signals that this scourge is very much like a dormant virus that awakens when conditions are propitious.  And this time is the downturn of the world economy, the conflict in Gaza with a terrorist entity and the rise of Islamism.

You would think that the civilized world, and by this I mean, the Western world, would side with a small country like Israel that has been enduring continuous rocket attacks against its citizens for the past eight years from an implacable terrorist entity bent on its destruction. But no, Israel is a Jewish country, and thus all Jews worldwide are complicit with the Jewish State’s defensive conflict against Hamas.

For those of you who have no knowledge of the offensives that took place throughout Europe in the 1930′s, you may wonder what types of Jew-baiting are considered antisemitic? Take for example the recent demonstrations (with a certain degree of encouragement by UN agencies),  that took place in college campuses in the UK, in Italy, in Sweden, Norway, Spain, Canada, and even in American campuses; diatribes such as “gas the Jews,” “boycott the Jews,” “Jews are guilty of the global economic meltdown,” and the onslaught against the Venezuelan Jewish community by President Hugo Chavez. Old synagogues are being defaced; Jewish cemeteries desecrated, “respectable” media rush to demonize Israel through unsupported claims. And let not forget the internet and media publications. This Jew bashing will indeed become more aggravated with the upcoming Durbin II conference in March.

So, what is a Jew to do in the face of this global pandemic? There is indeed a rational solution: Take the giant step of making aliyah. Yes, it is not easy to leave a comfortable life behind, but do not wait much longer when the situation may deteriorate to the point where it would be even more difficult. You should be worried today, but do not expect that tomorrow things may improve. Israel is a vibrant multicultural country, filled with life, determination and where you will identify with pride of being a Jew. We do not have natural resources, but we have the vision and the intellect to have made this small strip of land into a beautiful garden. And besides, whether you are religious or secular, it was written by the prophets over three thousand years ago, that Israel is eternal and that it is our home.
